Saudi Crown Prince Meets with French PM in Paris

Saudi Crown Prince Meets with French PM in Paris

He was accompanied on his visit by the Saudi ambassador to the United States, Prince Khaled bin Salman.

More than a dozen memorandums of understanding in tourism, energy and transportation are set to be signed between French and Saudi organisations, another source close to the delegation told AFP.

After Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman claimed that Iran's supreme leader "makes Hitler look good", Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami said that the young heir to the throne appears to be acting under "an illusion of power." .

He described the Crown Prince's visit to France as important particularly as the Kingdom is witnessing a new phase of economic, social and political reforms.

France hopes to possibly invest in sectors like technology, renewable energy, health and tourism that Saudi Arabia wants to develop, an official with Macron's office said.

Prince Mohammed's tour is meant to project "Saudi Arabia is open for business", Bernard Haykel, a professor at Princeton University, told AFP.

Saudi officials project strong relations between Prince Mohammed and Mr Macron, both of whom are undertaking reforms to transform their countries.

"This is not a traditional state visit", another source close to the Saudi delegation told AFP.

World champion Tom Walsh won the shot put gold for New Zealand at 21.41 meters after a setting a games record 22.45 in qualifying. Nigeria's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi took silver at 21.14m, narrowly ahead of 2014 champion O'Dayne Richards of Jamaica.

Talks also involved job opportunities for young Saudis at Apple, allowing them to benefit from the company's in-depth tech training.

But the trip follows a period of underlying tensions.

Macron waded into a regional crisis last November when Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Hariri tendered his resignation on live television from Riyadh, apparently under pressure from the crown prince.

Macron invited Hariri to Paris for talks and he later rescinded his resignation, a development that analysts say exposed the limits of the prince's authority.

Saudi Arabia's public prosecutor has begun investigations and opening arguments in the corruption cases of princes, top officials and businessmen who were detained late past year, an official told pan-Arab newspaper Al Sharq Al Awsat yesterday, as reported by Reuters.

The United Nations says 10,000 people have died in the fighting in the Yemen conflict.

Demonstrators will greet the prince with protests over the Saudi-led coalition's strikes in Yemen to fight Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Macron, 40, treads a diplomatic tightrope with the prince as he seeks to bolster his ties with the world's top oil exporter while also managing relations with Saudi Arabia's arch-rival Iran.
