Syrian Interceptors Take Off Against Incoming Missile Before Loud Boom

Freeland made the comments on the sidelines of a major worldwide summit in Lima, Peru, which U.S. President Donald Trump skipped last minute to deal with the recent chemical-weapons attack in Syria, which culminated in the launch of U.S., British and French strikes against Syrian targets on Friday night.

Trump said that last April's United States missile strike at a desert airbase following an earlier poison gas attack a year ago had not stopped the Syrian regime using chemical weapons.

Addressing the nation Friday evening, Trump said the joint strike with France and the United Kingdom is now underway.

USA officials say the Assad regime has conducted multiple chlorine attacks on rebels during the past six months.

May and her Cabinet, meanwhile, met in London on Thursday and "agreed on the need to take action to alleviate humanitarian distress and to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime", said a statement from Downing Street.

Loud explosions rocked Syria's capital and filled the sky with heavy smoke early Saturday after Mr Trump announced the air strikes in response for the country's alleged use of chemical weapons.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on April 12 said he personally believed an "inexcusable" use of chemical weapons had taken place in Syria.

"These are not the actions of a man, they are crimes of a monster", President Trump said of the attack in Douma last week.

Trump's United Nations ambassador, Nikki Haley, said the president had not yet made a final decision, two days after he tweeted that Russian Federation should "get ready" because a missile attack "will be coming" at Moscow's chief Middle East ally.

On Friday, U.S. Ambassador the United Nations Nikki Haley said analysis done by the U.S., U.K. and France proved the chemical attack.

Among the initial targets according to accounts from inside Syria were a branch of a research centre that has been linked to suspected chemical weapons development, several air bases and the headquarters of some of the Syrian army's elite units.

Speaking to reporters at the White House later in the day, Trump said a decision had not yet been made on a course of action.

Mr Peskov would not say if Moscow could use a Russia-US military hotline to avoid casualties in a case of a US strike, saying only that "the hotline exists and has remained active". His tweets indicate that he has, indeed, made a decision to strike Syria.

President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that missiles "will be coming" in response to the Douma incident.

French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron claimed that France had "proof" the Assad regime used chemical weapons in Douma at the weekend, and would support any U.S. action.

"The threats of some Western countries to attack Syria is based on lies that these countries fabricated along with terrorist organisations", Assad's office said.

"The Syrian regime has a history of using chemical weapons against its own people in cruel and abhorrent way. this consistent pattern of behaviour must be stopped", she said.

Syria and Russian Federation have denied any involvement in the alleged chemical attack, and have accused rebels in the region of fabricating these claims, according to CNN.

The U.S. officials told the American news outlet that the Assad regime is known to have used a mixture of chlorine and the nerve agent sarin in previous attacks.

Statements from Washington have been militaristic, ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, and threats by the U.S. and France were a violation of the United Nations charter.

Syria and its allies in Russian Federation have denied that chemical weapons were used in Douma, labeling the attack a hoax.

The U.S. Navy was moving an additional Tomahawk missile-armed ship within striking range of Syria as President Donald Trump and his national security aides mulled the scope and timing of an expected military assault in retaliation for a suspected poison gas attack.
