Syrian Vermonters React To News Of US, Allies Airstrikes

On Capitol Hill in Washington, however, the strikes ignited a fresh debate over the scope of the war on terror and just how far the Trump Administration can commit USA forces to an undeclared war in the Middle East.

The escalation was quickly met with strong words from Syria's backers Iran and Russia, with Russian President Vladimir Putin calling the strikes an "act of aggression against a sovereign state".

Just over a year ago U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a missile strike against the Syrian government for a chemical weapons attack against its own people.

Ms. Haley added that President Trump told her Saturday morning that if the Syrian regime uses poisonous gas again "the United States is locked and loaded" to strike again. It called the attack a flagrant violation of worldwide law. It is about ISIS and deterring Assad's use of chemical weapons.

In April 2017, the USA targeted a Syrian airbase from where it alleged a deadly chemical weapons attack was launched by the Assad regime against civilians at the town of Khan Sheikhoun.

Friday's strike was Trump's second ordered attack in Syria.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday that the United Kingdom is "confident" that the air strikes carried out by Britain, the USA and France had been successful, and that it had been "right and legal" to take action.

The strikes came in response to a suspected chemical weapon attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma last weekend that left dozens dead.

The attack was meant to send a message to Syrian leader Bashar Assad, as well as his allies Iran and Russian Federation, that use of the internationally banned chemical weapons would not be tolerated, but not to engage in the Syrian civil war, McKenzie said.

UFC Glendale: Dustin Poirier demands title shot after stopping Justin Gaethje cold
As Gaethje stumbled around the cage, Poirier swarmed in to tag him with combinations before finishing him along the cage wall. What remains unsure, however, is whether Poirier will get his wish for an instant title shot.

"When our President draws a red line, our President enforces the red line", she said.

"Russia convenes an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss aggressive actions of the USA and its allies", Putin said.

The United States, France and Britain defended their military action as legal during the Security Council meeting.

Freeland did not specify how she knew that the Syrian government was responsible, though she said Canada is working with non-governmental organizations and others to collect evidence of war crimes and other atrocities in Syria.

With nationalist music blaring in the background, small groups of residents gathered on the streets in several locations in Damascus, waving the Syrian flag as well as the flags of Iran and Russian Federation, which have supported Assad in the seven-year-old civil war.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in a statement backed the strikes, saying they "will reduce the regime's ability to further attack the people of Syria with chemical weapons".

The Security Council rejected the resolution.

The night-time air-strikes by the American-led forces targeted a Syrian chemical weapon storage facility where more than 100 missiles were deployed.
