Zuckerberg wins Facebook hearings, a loss for all, says Shira Ovide

The company has announced the launch of Data Abuse Bounty.

He also said his own personal data was exposed in the Cambridge Analytica breach.

Facebook isn't the only company that uses data in "creative" ways but what this last month or so highlights is that consent is a major issue.

Facebook may have blundered by letting its data be misused by Cambridge Analytica. Mr Zuckerberg told Congress that Facebook is planning to give its users - including those in the U.S. and Canada - all new rights under GDPR.

For most users this would have come about if they had previously downloaded the "This is your digital life" app.

The researcher behind the app collected data not just on those users but on their Facebook friends, then passed that data on to Cambridge Analytica. Facebook doesn't sell your data. That is a population recently targeted by Facebook with the development of its application "Facebook Messenger Kids". He was interrogated about foreign-bought ads during the presidential election. "They are already having conversations about how they cannot only make sure their current systems better protect user privacy and autonomy, but how artificially intelligence systems they are using can have ethical alignment built in by design", said Ms McEvoy.

"Senator, no, I would probably not choose to do that publicly here", Zuckerberg replied.

The main theme of both hearings seems to be that USA lawmakers are quite unfamiliar with not only Facebook but also the business models and intricacies of similar tech and social media companies.

That message may not resonate with Facebook users. Lawsuits by the Department of Justice to block future acquisitions of competitors on antitrust grounds will do little to prevent Facebook from developing its own competing products and stifling the competitors' growth, as it has done with Snapchat.

Cleveland swept Toronto in last year's playoffs, and they defeated the Raptors in two games toward the end of this season. But with lineups changing on an nearly game-by-game basis over the final weeks of the season, it's been a moving target.

Finally, will the apologies and the massive privacy breach under Zuckerberg's watch lead to an improved system of regulation? Sure, there were some soundbites but many lacked substance.

In some cases, the developers who design apps that collect user data aren't fully aware of how it is ultimately being disseminated, according to Mr Hardy.

Facebook has refreshed its Bookmarks menu to let users navigate, access and make changes to their privacy settings easily. Will this time be different? Of more than 2 million iOS apps scanned by Appthority for a recent report, 24,000 openly asked users for access permission to deeper device functionality for advertising purposes. Sniping with Google escalated when Facebook was outed for hiring public relations firm Burson-Marsteller to plant unfavorable stories in the media about Google's privacy practices.

But whether its lack of decline in user numbers due to lack of privacy concerns or lack of competitors is very much up to debate.

Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg's compensation reached $8.9 million in 2017, up by 54% from the year before, largely due to expenses related to personal security, a filing from the company showed.

But the advertising engine hatched in those early days powered Facebook's initial public offering in 2012 and turned Facebook into a must-buy for advertisers. The 33-year-old billionaire appeared humble throughout much of the hearing, with only a few smug smiles.

His answer was unsatisfying as he failed to name a single company that can compete with Facebook when it comes to the service it provides.

As Bloomberg points out, former Facebook employee Antonio Garcia Martinez has said this non-user data is "collected for growth reasons as well".

The social network is also facing a probe by United Kingdom data protection regulators and the European Commission.
