1988 road rage case 'an accident, nothing else': Navjot Singh Sidhu

Celebrations broke out at the house of Punjab cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu here after the Supreme Court spared him a jail term in the 1988 road rage case.

According to the prosecution, on December 27, 1988 Sidhu and Sandhu had been parked in a Gypsy in the middle of a road in Patiala when the victim and 2 others driving in a Maruti found the Gypsy and asked the occupants to remove it.

Reversing the High Court ruling, the apex court acquitted him of the serious charge of culpable homicide in the 1988 case. However, defending his government's stance in Supreme Court, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said they had no legal option available. "I have sent a message to Rahul Gandhi ji & Priyanka Gandhi ji that my life is yours", ANI quoted the Congress minister soon after the Supreme Court acquitted Sindhu in the road rage case. "A2 (Rupinder Singh Sandhu) is acquitted", the bench concluded.

The apex court had granted bail to the cricketer-turned-politician after he was sentenced to three years in prison by the Punjab and Haryana high court. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead. It was claimed by the prosecution that Sidhu had even fled the scene of the crime.

However, their request was turned down by the myPersonality app team in 2013 because of the company's political ambitions. Another case of too little, too late...

A confirmation of the high court order would have led to the disqualification of Sidhu from the legislature and the government as per the Representation of the People Act. The man received injuries to his head, and subsequently died of brain haemorrhage.

"Such being the evidence on record, the conclusion of the High Court that Gurnam Singh's death is caused by subdural hemorrhage but not cardiac arrest, in our opinion, is not based on any evidence on record and is a pure conjecture". A jail sentence of more than two years would have put to an end his political inning as the law says that an MP, MLA or an MLC immediately loses his seat on conviction and is barred from contesting elections for six years, after the end of the sentence.

In April 2018, the Punjab government, of which he is a part, had sought conviction of Congress leader in connection with the 30-year-old case.
