Al-Sadr refused to form a coalition with supporters of Iran

Al-Sadr refused to form a coalition with supporters of Iran

If confirmed, the outcome would throw open the race to become the next prime minister, as internationally favoured incumbent Haider al-Abadi lagged behind after a vote hit by record abstentions.

Recounts following disputes in the Dohuk and Kirkuk provinces have delayed any final announcement, but officials said a full tally should be out over the next two days.

But If Tehran overplays its hand by squeezing Sadr out of a coalition government dominated by its allies, it risks losing influence by provoking conflict between Iranian-backed Shiites and those loyal to Sadr.

"We are Sayirun (Marching) with Hikma (Wisdom) and al-Wataniya (Patriotism) so that the Iradah (Will) of the people be our aim and to build Jilan Jadidan (a New Generation) and to witness Taghir (Gorran/Change) to the better and for the al-Qarar (Decision) to be Iraqi", the tweet read, according to Rudaw, punning on the political party names in Iraq.

The annexation of the peninsula in 2014 was condemned by Kiev and the West as an illegal land grab. No toll will be collected from cars and trucks moving over the bridge, Starovoit added.

Despite the election setback, Abadi might still be granted a second term in office by parliament and on Monday he called on all political blocs to respect the results and suggested he was willing to work with Sadr to form a government.

Projecting himself as an Iraqi nationalist, Sadr has a zealous following among the young, poor, and dispossessed among Shia Iraqis, but had been sidelined by influential Iran-backed figures. Since he did not run for a seat, he will not be eligible for the role.

While speculation swirls, the next concrete step remains completing the vote count and firming up the final makeup of Iraq's new 329-seat parliament. By the end of the announcement, al-Sadr's list had the highest popular vote, followed by al-Amiri's. The commission gave no indication on when further results would be announced.

But after 14 years, more than $1 trillion, millions of Iraqi dead and thousands of US troops killed and maimed, the USA now has less influence over Iraq than it had while former Central Intelligence Agency operative Saddam Hussein was in power. The other winning blocks, though, will have to approve his nomination. He blamed Tehran, for maneuvering Al-Maliki into power.
