American clothing brand Gap 'terribly sorry' over China map shirt omitting Taiwan

The government has lodged a protest against a change of its designation to "Taiwan, China" on the website of Air Canada, the country's flag carrier and largest airline, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday.

USA retail giant, Gap has issued an apology after selling a T-shirt displaying the wrong map of China after the design omitted Chinese-claimed territories including islands in the South China Sea, Taiwan and south Tibet.

According to the Washington Post, it also drew ire for not correctly demarcating China's claimed territory in the South China Sea.

According to the BBC, US clothing brand Gap has apologies after selling T-shirts that showed an "incorrect map" of China.

In a statement the company said, "Gap Inc. respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China".

"We are terribly sorry for this unintentional mistake".

As an independent and sovereign nation, the people of Taiwan will not be subdued by any threat or intimidation, and any such attempts will only stir resentment from the people of Taiwan toward the Chinese government, he added. The company apologized for the error and reaffirmed its adherence to Chinese rules and laws.

The photo of the Gap tee was snapped inside a store in Canada, and The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, tweeted a photo with the "correct" version of the map.

"We have noticed this (Gap) statement and we will pay close attention to it", Lu said.

The U.S. has started pushing back against Beijing, with the White House condemning China's efforts to control how U.S. airlines refer to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as "Orwellian nonsense".

The Chinese Civil Aviation Administration had sent a notice to 36 foreign airlines, including a number of United States carriers, on April 25, asking them to comply with Beijing's standards, according to the White House.
