Elon Musk says Tesla will be 'thoroughly reorganised'

Elon Musk says Tesla will be 'thoroughly reorganised'

Police in a Salt Lake City suburb say it's not immediately known whether a Tesla Model S sedan's semi-autonomous Autopilot driving system was in use when it rear-ended a truck apparently without braking before impact at approximately 60 miles per hour. The fire department mechanic truck had been stopped at a red light.

Federal officials have opened investigations into at least two other crashes involving Tesla vehicles in the last two months. The driver, who suffered only a broken ankle, told police that she had activated Autopilot before the crash occurred.

There was no indication the Tesla's driver was under the influence of any substance, and information on what the driver may have told investigators about the circumstances of the crash likely wouldn't be available before Monday, Winkler said by telephone.

The tech tycoon went on to praise the safety of the Model S, saying that it was "amazing" the driver only broke her ankle in the accident and that "an impact at that speed usually results in severe injury or death".

The Tesla autopilot system uses radar, cameras with 360-degree visibility and sensors to detect surrounding vehicles and objects. Tesla requires drivers to remain alert and keep their hands on the wheel at all times when Autopilot is engaged.

While those crashes could raise concerns about the safety of Tesla's products, the more immediate threat to the company's viability is lagging Model 3 production at its Fremont, California assembly plant.

This is not the first time a Tesla has collided with a fire engine while its Autopilot mode was engaged.

Waymo, Google's self-driving vehicle spinoff, confirmed that Matthew Schwall had joined the company.

Elon Musk has said the "short burn of the century" is coming soon to investors betting against Tesla Inc.

There was no immediate comment from Tesla about Schwall. He said Tesla's record of one fatality every 512 million kilometres compared favourably with the 2017 national average of 138 million kilometres, according to safety regulators. NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway said he didn't know whether the agency would get involved with the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was not investigating the Utah crash, and Tesla said it had not yet received auto data and did not yet know the facts, including whether Autopilot was engaged.
