Gaza's deadliest day of violence in years

Gaza's deadliest day of violence in years

Widespread condemnation followed the Israeli military's killing of 58 Palestinians on Monday at protests in Gaza against the opening of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.

Describing the USA and Israel as "partners in crime", Al-Qaradaghi said: "The entire world, including many Arab leaders, is responsible for the crimes being committed against the Palestinians". Amnesty International noted that the fatalities include at least six children.

"We are saddened by deaths and injuries that occurred today and over past weeks", Freeland tweeted.

It was the deadliest day of violence along the Israel-Gaza border since the 2014 war. "It's why I tell my students to avoid the passive voice". "Gazan civilians were shot and killed by Israeli fire", added another.

One of the strongest statements came from United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, who condemned the "shocking killing of dozens, injury of hundreds by Israeli live fire".

Israel dropped leaflets warning Palestinians that they would be shot if they came within 300 feet of the fence and were armed. Stop glossing over the facts. "One occupies militarily the other".

Britain's minister for the Middle East, Alistair Burt, acknowledged "Israel's right to defend its borders" but said "the large volume of live fire is extremely concerning".

The protesters burned tires and slung rocks at the Israeli forces located at a distance beyond the fence. Israel said its soldiers fired only at "targets of terrorist activity".

Shapiro said Hamas has been clear about its intentions, and that the group has said it wants to send thousands of people to storm the border. "We will continue to act with determination to protect our sovereignty and our citizens".

Hamas denied instigating the violence.

Monday is the 70th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel (though not according to the Jewish calendar by which it is normally marked in Israel - that was last month). The area was relatively quiet early in the day, with many Gazans at the funerals.

Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned on Tuesday the actions of the Israeli authorities against the protesting Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and called for an investigation in this regard in the International Criminal Court (ICC).

"The location of the embassy has no bearing on the specific boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem, or the resolution of contested borders".

In London, the British government said it had no plans to move its Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and said it disagreed with the USA decision to do so.

In December 2017, a United Nations Security Council resolution dealt a symbolic blow to the United States's decision after all members but the USA voted for a withdrawal of Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital (The Guardian).

The issue has been so thorny that global negotiators had left the question of Jerusalem to the final stages of any peace deal. The Palestinian health ministry said that hundreds more were wounded.
