IL should allow sports betting

Baishampayan Ghose /FlickrThis week seven members of the Supreme Court agreed that Congress exceeded its powers when it passed a law that prohibited states from legalizing sports betting.

The ruling was consistent with conservative deference to state's rights, but ran afoul of social conservative opposition to gambling.

Webis said Wednesday that while the ruling will not have an immediate impact on revenue levels until individual state legalisation is in place, the announcement is regarded as a boost for the company's USA operations.

Nearly all of the justices seemed to agree that Congress could have achieved the same result by passing a slightly different law that would have been constitutional, Jacob Sullum notes.

In July 2017, Gov. Dannel Malloy signed a bill that will allow the state to move quickly if the federal sports betting ban is overturned by the Supreme Court or repealed by Congress.

The high ruling in Murphy v. NCAA reversed a decision from the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, concluding that the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act violated the Constitution's anti-commandeering principle. As Justice Stephen Breyer put it in his concurring opinion, "the only problem" with the challenged law "lies in its means, not its end".
