Michigan State settles with Larry Nassar victims for $500 million

Michigan State settles with Larry Nassar victims for $500 million

Amanda Thomashow, who reported abuse by Dr. Nassar to the university in 2014, said on Wednesday that she hoped the settlement would lead to cultural changes at Michigan State and a shift in the national conversation about sexual abuse.

The settlement only applies to cases brought against Michigan State University and individuals associated with the school.

The university's board chairman Brian Breslin also issued a written statement saying: "We are truly sorry to all the survivors and their families for what they have been through, and we admire the courage it has taken to tell their stories". MSU trustees OK'd the arrangement in a Tuesday night conference call. She says the deal will help the "sister survivors" move forward, and her decision to come forward publicly in 2016 was motivated by the need for accountability and reform, "so that other little children don't live the nightmares we lived". "We will continue working as a board to address the necessary changes and improvements that are needed at our university". Victims alleged that Michigan State covered up Nassar's abuse and ignored reports of sexual misconduct.

"I am pleased a settlement has been reached with the courageous young women whose lives have been impacted by this tragic situation". But we did it. Seventy-five million of those funds will be set aside for future victims to come forward, while the remaining $425 million will be divided among the victims named in the suit.

Why are some USA prison sentences so long?

Broward Deputy Scot Peterson Gets $8k A Month From Pension
About 18 months before the shooting, Peterson attempted to have Cruz involuntarily committed over mental health concerns. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told CNN that video from outside the school corroborated Huff's account.

His current sentence is 40 to 175 years in prison. "There was a monster operating with impunity at Michigan State for years, and no one did anything".

In a joint statement from the survivors and MSU, the parties announced that the settlement neither includes any confidentiality or non-disclosure agreements, nor will it impact the ongoing litigation many survivors have against USA Gymnastics, the U.S. Olympic Committee, Bela and Martha Karolyi, or any other parties. There are also now 150 civil lawsuits filed against Nassar.

Michigan State and lawyers for 332 victims announced Wednesday that they have reached a $500 million settlement.

Nine law firms have billed MSU for work done in defending the school in hundreds of lawsuits, handling internal investigations, investigations by state and federal agencies or for dealing with the university's insurance providers, according to documents MSU provided to the State Journal in response to public records requests.

With a stellar reputation as the doctor to Olympic champions, Nassar had evaded scrutiny several times since the late 1990s by insisting his abuse was actually cutting-edge treatment that was misunderstood by some patients.
