Rep. Don Bacon awaits challenge from Democratic opponent

But the race will be a true test of the progressive hypothesis, as many moderate Democrats and Republicans believe Eastman is too far to the left to win in a district that just voted Ashford out two years ago. Ashford held the Second District seat for one term before falling to Bacon in the 2016 election.

Political newcomer Kara Eastman has defeated seasoned legislator Brad Ashford 51 percent to 49 percent in the Democratic primary for Nebraska's Second Congressional District race.

Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts easily won his party's nomination, and Democratic voters chose State Sen. It will either be the republican incumbent Deb Fischer - or her democratic challenger Jane Raybould.

Krist defeated two other Democratic candidates in Tuesday's primary election.

Ashford had the backing of national Democratic leaders, including his former colleagues in Congress who donated to his campaign.

Ricketts ran against Krystal Gabel of Omaha, a registered Republican who has volunteered to create the Legal Marijuana Now Party of Nebraska.

Raybould defeated three Democratic challengers in Tuesday's primary race for the seat held by Republican Sen.

The others seeking the GOP nomination are retired Omaha math professor Jack Heidel; writer and retired air conditioning technician Dennis Frank Macek; former finance manager Jeffrey Lynn Stein; and Lincoln businessman Todd Watson. Smith won yesterday's Republican primary with 66-percent of the vote and will take on Democrat Paul Theobald in November.

Nebraska voters started heading to the polls at 8am this morning to cast ballots in the state's primary election.
