Sensex falls over 230 points in closing, Nifty comes below 10700

The state election had a temporary effect on the markets, but macro-economic factors such as the rise in crude oil prices and inflation will have a bigger say in the medium term, said analysts. The broader 50-stock Nifty closed 4.75 points lower at 10,801.85.

The NSE Nifty was trading 0.02% higher to 10,808.60 points at 02:54 pm, while the BSE Sensex was trading 0.05% higher to 35,574.03 points, after news that the rival Congress party is ready to support a JD (S) government in the southern state.

The barometer Sensex of the BSE, which had opened at 35,452.35 points, closed at 35,387.88 points - lower by 156.06 points or 0.44 per cent - from the previous day's close at 35,543.94 points.

The market breadth was weaker on BSE, as 1,024 shares advanced against 1,597 declined and 136 were unchanged. At 11.25 p.m, the Sensex was trading down 164.70 points or 0.46% at 35,379.24 with 21 components falling.

PNB, Syndicate Bank, Bank of Baroda, Century Plyboards, Morepen Labs, Adani Transmission, Reliance Communications and Shakti Pumps fell up to 16 percent.

Weighing the 50 most active stocks on the NSE is the NIFTY, which has a base value of 1,000 with its base date being 1995.

The Small-Cap index edged up 0.06 per cent. Among the Nifty50 stocks, Hindalco was the top loser, down 2.8 per cent followed by UPL, ITC, HDFC and Bharti Airtel, which fell between 2-2.5 per cent.
