Stephen King slammed for 'merciless' joke about Melania Trump's kidney surgical procedure

President Donald Trump said Melania Trump was "doing really well" Tuesday following kidney surgery, adding that the first lady was expected to leave the hospital in the next few days.

As far as learning more about the first lady's condition that required the procedure in the first place, CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, said certain benign tumors can be treated with an embolization procedure, but that cysts do not typically get embolized.

Trump tweeted Tuesday that "our great First Lady is doing really well. Thank you for so much love and support!" he tweeted. While it was first used in the kidneys in the 1970s for renal cancer, urologists now use it for a wide range of ailments including hard-to-control bleeding, infections, end-stage kidney disease and benign tumors.

The White House earlier said the operation was successful and Mrs Trump, 48, has not suffered any complications. They have a 12-year-old son named Barron. Mrs. Trump also represented the administration at the April funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush.

The surgery also comes at a time when the first lady has made a renewed push into the public spotlight with her unveiling last week of the "Be Best" initiative targeting bullying, drug use and suicide and how the issues affect children.

The president had no public appearances scheduled for Monday and declined to answer shouted questions from reporters about how his wife was feeling as he departed the White House for Walter Reed.

Though the President remained at the White House during the surgery, he traveled to the hospital in Marine One in the evening, where he visited with his wife for over an hour.

The Trumps' marriage has come under scrutiny in recent months after revelations that a porn actress was paid $130,000 to keep quiet about claims she had sex with Trump in 2006. Separately, a former Playboy model has revived her allegations of a 10-month affair with Trump in 2006.

Mrs. Trump has, at times, has been noticeably absent from her husband's side.

The First Lady has been hospitalized for a kidney condition.

Many were caught off guard by the news, as there was no word of the First Lady's condition until Monday.
