The Red Hydrogen One will debut on Verizon and AT&T

We'll likely have more information on the Hydrogen One leading up to its release.

Camera maker RED has been accepting pre-orders for its Hydrogen One phone for close to a year now, but the shipping date keeps slipping – from Q1, then August and then to a non-committal “this summer”.

Building off of the modular roots of the Moto Z, the Hydrogen One features a pogo pin system that will allow for add-ons that enhance the functionality of the phone over time.

Today, both AT&T and Verizon announced they will be carrying the RED Hydrogen One. The phone is the first consumer handset from Red, the company better known for its high-end digital cameras used to create Hollywood films. That's because the phone is supposed to be the world's first holographic phone, a device that would offer users 3D-like experiences without glasses. They will be previewing the phone to the public showing games, movies, and other content that will be available on it.

If that seems like a lot to ask for a smartphone, even in this age of the $999 iPhone X, Red believes the Hydrogen One's feature set justifies the price tag.

Another detail missing from the carriers' announcements is how much you can expect to pay for the Hydrogen One. Verizon also doesn't give a release date for the phone. Studios in Los Angeles on June 2-3.

AT&T said in its press release that the device would be available later this summer with Verizon only committing to a window of "later this year". The phone can also display standard 2D images. "Unlocked" Pre-orders will however ship before that".
