Tony O'Brien, HSE chief, steps down over smear test scandal

In a statement released by the HSE on Thursday evening, it has been announced that the Director General Tony O'Brien would be stepping down from his position with nearly immediate effect, with his last day being Friday 11 May.

Minister Harris said he spoke with Mr Connaghan on Friday.

Mr O'Brien, who announced his departure on Thursday, had been under pressure to resign due to controversy over Ireland's cervical smear services.

Speaking at the launch of the National Doctors Together For Yes summit in Dublin, Minister Harris said long smear test waiting lists are not acceptable.

Mr O'Brien resigned hours after it emerged that an internal HSE briefing note that flagged potential errors in screening tests in 2016 stressed the need for a media strategy to respond to stories of women whose cancer diagnosis was missed.

However, because of a backlog they were outsourced to an American company which normally carries out less detailed tests but does so every year to compensate.

North Korea To Break Up Nuclear Site This Month
Kim had revealed plans to close down the nuclear check web site throughout his summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in final month.

"And thirdly, I've asked him to follow my direction I issued yesterday after the Cabinet meeting to put in place a package of practical supports for women and their families who have been impacted by this".

He will also appoint an interim director general of the HSE following the resignation of Mr O'Brien.

Tony O'Brien has hit out at the conduct of the Public Accounts Committee that met to discuss the implications of the CervicalCheck revelations on Thursday.

He said he had not been in a position to hear the woman's interview. Mr O'Brien said he wanted to avoid any further impact to the delivery of health and social care services, and...

He said outsourcing and quality assurance will form part of the Scally inquiry into the Cervical Check scandal.
