United Kingdom could ban combustible materials in tall buildings after Grenfell fire

Flammable cladding blamed for London's Grenfell Tower fire may have been used on as many as 12,000 buildings in Queensland, a taskforce has found.

Dame Judith Hackitt has called for "radical reform" of fire safety rules, saying they are not now fit for objective.

The taskforce was set up by the state government after the 2017 Grenfell disaster - when 71 people, including two Australians, died - to assess how many buildings carry the aluminium composite panels.

It led to high rises in Sunderland being looked at, and work is now underway at the towers on Dame Dorothy Street having their cladding replaced this week.

A report on building regulations after the Grenfell Tower tragedy will call for "a wholesale culture change" on fire safety.

He added: "Having listened carefully to concerns, the Government will consult on banning the use of combustible materials in cladding systems on high-rise residential buildings".

THE government will pay for the removal and replacement of risky cladding materials from tower blocks, Theresa May pledged yesterday.

Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board stated that it is not investigating the Utah crash. Police issued the driver a traffic citation for failure to keep proper lookout.

She warned that the work to remove and replace the cladding should be done promptly alongside other needed improvements to social housing.

It's stated that housing associations and local authorities will have access to the money, along with reasonable removal and replacement costs, at an estimated total of £400 million.

Local London Assembly member Leonie Cooper said: "In Wandsworth we have seen the council quite rightly pay for fire wardens to be on hand 24 hours a day at both towers (Sudbury House and Castlemaine Tower) - but this has incurred cost for more than a year".

Shahin Sadafi, chair of the Grenfell United survivors group, told Today it was "very disappointing" that the report appears not to include an outright ban on flammable cladding.

Shadow housing secretary John Healey said it "beggars belief" that the report "continues to give a green light" to combustible materials on high-rise blocks.

According to BBC News, Dame Judith's appointment to lead the review had been met with some criticism due to her former role as director of the Energy Saving Trust.

"Today we want her to look us in the eye and and tell us that these unsafe materials will never be used again". People are not safe in their homes. "When they rewrite these regulations it must be by people who put safety first, and there must be consequences if these are not followed".
