Cut melons linked to salmonella outbreak in Michigan, Indiana

According to Food Safety News, there are 32 cases reported in MI, 11 in IN, 10 in Missouri, six in IL and one in Ohio. Other states also have reported illnesses - including Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and OH - with 28 sickened outside of MI.

Health officials have issued an advisory about a salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melons sold at certain stores in the Midwest. Those cases range in age from 23 to 87 years and have been reported in all regions of the state, the Illinois Dept of Public Health said.

The CDC said on Friday that 124 people have been sickened in 36 states after contact with live poultry, such as chicks and ducklings in backyard flocks. The list of states and stores could expand depending on the investigation.

Most people affected by Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after eating food contaminated by the bacteria.

Elderly people, infants and anyone with weak immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.

Afghan President Ghani Announces Rare Ceasefire With Taliban
Taliban has been fighting Kabul since they were ousted from power in 2001 by the US-led forces. The insurgency now controls or contests almost half of Afghanistan's 407 districts.

The CDC says this particular salmonella outbreak could mean more hospitalized people than usual.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is now trying to find the supplier to affected stores.

If you've purchased pre-cut melon from Walmart or Kroger, including fruit salad mixes with melon, you should throw it away.

The CDC says the outbreak is linked to pre-cut melon. They should wash their hands and all knives and cutting boards used.
