Man arrested after hostage incident in Paris: minister

The French interior minister says that a hostage-taker has been arrested and his hostages freed, some four hours after holing up in a building in central Paris.

Photos and videos from the scene showed numerous police vehicles and ambulances at Rue des Petites Ecuries in the 10th arrondissement of the French capital.

A journalist for BFM Paris said two hostages had been taken.

A spokesman for France's BRI intervention brigade said negotiations with the man were underway.

There was no indication of a terrorist motive, police said.

IL officer receives award for rescuing boy running on busy highway
Last month - Mannino's dash cam captured a shocking sight - a toddler running all by himself in the right lane of a busy highway. The department's post says the child "escaped his mother's watchful eye" and wandered along Route 59 as traffic whizzed by.

Streets in the area have been sealed off by police cordons.

The hostages are being held in the internal courtyard of the building, which contains a mix of offices and residential apartments.

Police would not immediately confirm whether the person holding the hostages was armed or describe the nature of his demands.

Paris police have not revealed how many people were taken hostage.

The hostage-taker also claimed he had an accomplice outside the building with a bomb, according to union official Lefebvre. That hostage was also reportedly doused with gasoline and hit in the face, he said.
