MPs force major soft Brexit shift

MPs force major soft Brexit shift

British Prime Minister Theresa May faces a showdown in parliament with lawmakers later on Tuesday who want a "meaningful vote" on an eventual Brexit deal and to set the government's "direction" if the house rejects the agreement.

The Lords amendment number 25, which was voted through by MPs last night, states that the United Kingdom government must not do anything which is incompatible with the Northern Ireland Act 1998.

In a painful blow the the PM, Remain-supporting MP Philip Lee quit as justice minister this morning, saying he could not support "how our country's exit from the European Union looks set to be delivered".

Yet, the Labour camp is split on the Brexit issue between pro-Leave MPs ready to vote with the government, and rebels who've come out against their own party's amendment to support the country's membership in the European Economic Area.

The Tanaiste Simon Coveney will brief the Cabinet today on the status of Brexit negotiations.

In what is likely to be a highly-charged appearance before the backbench 1922 Committee on Monday, the Prime Minister is expected to say that the way MPs vote will send a message.

And what if the Brexiters force May to renege on her putative pledge to the Remainer rebels?

Speaking at prime minister's questions, May said the government meant to bring forward its own amendment, but stressed that she could not allow MPs to bind the government's hands or to open it up to the risk that Brexit could be reversed.

I was the only one". "So talking about withdrawal of United States forces is something that needs to be really thought through". He said he will invite Kim to the White House. and visit Pyongyang himself at an appropriate time.

But, the pro-EU MPs' version of what they were promised appears to differ from what they government says it offered, threatening to reignite the dispute and reviving the possibility of a revolt that would badly damage May's authority.

"First, we must never do anything that undermines the Government's negotiating position or encourages delays in the negotiations", Mr Davis said.

The disagreement centres on whether the government agreed to consider a specific clause of the rebel proposal that would hand parliament control of the Brexit process if ministers are unable to strike an exit deal by February 15, 2019. "Any compromise [amendment] would have to be tabled by Govt in Lords".

MPs will vote on Wednesday on whether to dismiss a plan proposed by the upper chamber of parliament which would require ministers to report what efforts they had made to secure a customs union with the EU by the end of October. Brexiteers fear it is a Trojan horse to frustrate Brexit and bind the prime minister's hands.

"So effectively we are going to reproduce the customs union and the single market and the Government will not be able to comply with Tuesday's legal obligation unless it does so".

Keir Starmer, Labour's shadow Brexit secretary, was refusing to accept the government at its word Tuesday.
