New U.S. Taiwan Office Prompts Questions Over Who Will Lead It

New U.S. Taiwan Office Prompts Questions Over Who Will Lead It

Trump decided not to send cabinet-level officials to the opening ceremony to avoid further antagonising Beijing amid other tensions over trade and China's claims to much of the South China Sea, sources with ties to the USA and Chinese governments told the South China Morning Post earlier this month.

Taiwan, meanwhile, has become increasingly marginalised on the global stage with the loss of diplomatic allies who previously recognised the government of the self-ruled island, but have now switched to Beijing.

Heather Nauert, spokesperson for the Department of State, said in a congratulatory message to the AIT that through the AIT, the USA and Taiwan share values and enjoy close cooperation on a wide range of regional and global issues.

The United States on Tuesday unveiled a new $255 million de facto embassy in Taiwan in what was hailed as a "milestone" in relations, as the self-ruled island comes under increasing pressure from China.

"We may be separated by a great ocean", Royce said in prepared remarks, "but our shared convictions, values, and trust form a strong foundation for cooperation across a range of issues". Beijing has been more hostile since Tsai was elected Taiwan's president in 2016 because she refuses to recognise the "one China" policy.

An NGO, which has for decades been known as the de-facto embassy for the USA in Taiwan, has opened up a flashy new office in Taipei.

Taiwan's president, Tsai Ing-wen, told the crowd at the dedication ceremony that the building marks "a new chapter in a story that has been decades in the making". Beijing has cut all contacts with Tsai's government, reduced the number of Chinese tourists visiting the island and upped its military threat with war games and air patrols around the island and by sailing its aircraft carrier through the Taiwan Strait.

Canadian dairy farmers say hands off their protections as Trump demands concessions
Trump followed up on Sunday with tweets calling free trade with Canada "fools trade" and said Trudeau "acts hurt when called out". Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, lashed out at Trudeau as "amateurish" and "sophomoric".

Meanwhile, Taiwan's relations with the United States have grown closer amid Washington's own struggles with Beijing.

In March, President Donald Trump signed the Taiwan Travel Act that encourages high-level visits between the two sides.

"The friendship between Taiwan and the US has never been more promising", Tsai said.

"I offer you this", he said, "a tangible symbol that the United States is here to stay".

"It's been said before that Taiwan is being used as a bargaining chip, and so far we can not rule that out", Lin said.

Washington's decision to "slightly upgrade relations" is mainly due to its disillusionment with China and the ascension of a more hawkish view toward China in the Trump administration, said Denny Roy, a fellow at the East-West Center think tank in Honolulu.
