Pope Francis Accepts Resignation Of Bishop Juan Barros Over Chilean Abuse Scandal

In his continuing efforts to show he has grasped the extent of the Catholic church's sexual abuse scandal, and intends to deal with those embroiled in it as perpetrators or colluders, Francis accepted the resignations on Monday of Juan Barros, as well as his fellow bishops Gonzalo Duarte and Cristián Caro.

The Vatican says the pope has accepted the resignations of the other two bishops for reasons of having reached the age limit of 75.

Barros previously appeared in the scandal center in Chile since ever since the Pope appointed him Bishop of Osorno in 2015, despite the objections of local believers, their advisers on the prevention of sexual violence and some other bishops of Chile.

Pope Francis has, according to BBC, apologized to victims after more than 1,000 Chileans wrote to him, asking him to reconsider the installation of Juan Barros as bishop of the Chilean city of Osorno.

The Church said it would name a delegate next Monday to be stationed in Santiago and receive accusations of abuse, part of a new effort to help victims seek quick justice on still-open cases, some of which go back decades.

Barros, who is a central figure in the controversy, has been accused of covering up abuse committed by another priest in the 80s and 90s.

Abuse survivors have alleged that when Bishop Barros was still a priest he witnessed their abuse by his mentor, Fr Fernando Karadima.

All of Chiles bishops resigned en masse last month following the scandal.

Trump went after Sanford on Twitter Tuesday afternoon, as voters continued to go to the polls, calling him "very unhelpful". In a February 2017 Politico piece, he said Trump has "fanned the flames of intolerance". "He is better off in Argentina".

"The day I see proof against Bishop Barros, then I will talk".

"A new day has begun in Chile's Catholic Church!" tweeted Juan Carlos Cruz, the abuse survivor who had denounced Barros for years and pressed the Vatican to take action.

The report prompted Francis to summon all of Chile's Catholic hierarchy to an unprecedented summit last month, where they all offered their resignations.

But by also accepting the resignations of the two other bishops, Francis is making clear that the troubles in Chile's church do not rest on Barros' shoulders alone, or on those of the more than 40 other priests and three other bishops trained by the Rev. Fernando Karadima.

"The resignation of these bishops should not dilute their criminal responsibility", he said.

Acknowledging that the pope's program "is very tight", Martin added, "We will find a way in which the pope will be able to address the concerns of all of those people", he said.

Francis has promised Chilean Catholics affected by sexual abuse that "never again" would the church ignore them or the cover-up of abuse in their country.

After he returned to the Vatican from that trip, Francis sent the Church's top sex crimes expert to Chile, to investigate further.

After receiving their 2,300-page report detailing the extent of clergy sexual abuse in Chile, the Pope apologised.
