President Trump meets Kim Jong Un

President Trump meets Kim Jong Un

"I just think it's going to work out very nicely", he said during a lunch with Singapore's prime minister on Monday.

"Past practices and prejudices were obstacles on our way forward, but we overcame all of them and are here today", Kim said. He has not given up a single nuclear bomb, he's not given up a single ICBM, he's not given up any of his nuclear infrastructure.

The walkabout occurred less than 12 hours before Kim's potentially world-changing day of diplomacy, when he will become the first-ever North Korean leader to meet with a sitting US President.

While on his way to meet Kim, Trump also tweeted that White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow had suffered a heart attack and has been hospitalized outside Washington, D.C. Kim has been accused of horrific rights abuses against his people.

This was the first meeting between the two leaders - one a 71-year-old billionaire businessman democratically elected to head a superpower; the other a boyish heir handed the reins of a brutally oppressive dictatorship.

Political figures, including Democrats, wished Trump well in his quest for a workable nuclear deal with Kim. "We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!"

Sitting across Mr Kim and his team at the larger meeting was the USA leader, his chief of staff John Kelly, secretary of state Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton.

In a choice that seems to make light of a lot of really quite serious things at once, Twitter is promoting its new #TrumpKimSummit emoji for Tuesday's summit in Singapore.

She corrected herself later in the broadcast, saying: 'As you know on live TV sometimes you don't always say things perfectly. Another individual wrote: "When Freudian slip is intentional and all pretence of subtlety is openly mocked as diplomacy".

On the eve of the first encounter between a sitting USA president and a leader of North Korea, American officials are maintaining any resulting agreement must lead to an end of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile threats.

Trump also took a familiar jab at the press during the summit: As reporters yelled questions during the photo op, Trump told Kim, "The press, they never stop".

The U.S. president will then address the media before flying out late Tuesday Singapore time. Or, it could amount to little more than a much-photographed handshake.

Mr Trump was optimistic that the talks would prove productive, saying: "We're going to have a great discussion and I think tremendous success".

Not to be outdone, Kim firmly pumped Trump's hand, looking him straight in the eye for the duration, before breaking off to face the media.

Trump entered the Kim summit less than a week after an acrimonious G-7 meeting in which he and longtime American allies argued about trade policy.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before". I couldn't go home. "We are prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America's been willing to provide previously". But no one can credibly suggest that a durable or verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula can be achieved when North Korea remains a completely closed and totalitarian state. US officials have said a best case scenario would be that it serves as a launching pad for negotiations that would provide Kim with physical security and his closed off nation with economic assurances in exchange for irreversibly dismantling his country's nuclear capabilities.
