Raptors ex-coach Dwane Casey to lead Pistons

The Detroit Pistons announced today an agreement with Dwane Casey to join the organization as Head Coach.

Former head coach of the Toronto Raptors, and current Coach of the Year, Dwane Casey has agreed to a five-year contract, worth about seven million ler year, to coach the Pistons.

The only coaching vacancy remaining belongs to the Toronto Raptors, and its their out-bound head coach filling the penultimate one. The NBA coach of the year finalist was sacked shortly after Toronto was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Casey, 61, was voted "Coach of the Year" by his fellow National Basketball Association coaches after leading Toronto to an Eastern Conference-best 59-23 record, the best mark in franchise history, but he was relieved of his duties shortly after another embarrassing four-game sweep at the hands of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

"I'm confident that this team has the pieces in place to compete at a very high level", Mr. Casey added.

While dropping a hint about the Pistons job last Friday on ESPN's First Take, Casey said, "I would put Blake Griffin as a star in this league and Andre Drummond made the All-Star team".

Casey is the front-runner for the NBA's coach of the year award to be presented later this month. He led Toronto to four Atlantic Division titles in five years, and three consecutive 50-win seasons.

The team had reportedly narrowed down its search between Casey and John Beillin of the University of MI last week. Part of getting the Pistons back on track will be fixing their offence, which ranked 22nd in both field goal percentage and points per game last season.
