Season’s 1st tropical storm Aletta forms in eastern Pacific - NHC

A new study finds that tropical cyclones around the world are moving slightly slower over land and water, dumping more rain as they stall, just as Hurricane Harvey did past year.

These slower speeds don't mean the winds circling the eye of the storm are slowing down.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Aletta was centered about 425 miles (680 kilometers) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, late Wednesday.

Kossin found storms moving across land in the Eastern United States slowed down 20 percent between 1949 and 2016.

The center said the storm was likely to strengthen some more as it moved farther out into the Pacific, but predicted Aletta would begin weakening Saturday.

According to the study by Dr Jim Kossin from the National Centers for Environmental Information, tropical cyclones have slowed in both hemispheres and in every ocean basin except the Northern Indian Ocean.

Salad Cream: Brit supermarkets vow to keep calling condiment its rightful name
Heinz has defended the re-brand after 104 years by saying only 14% of those buying Salad Cream now use it in their salads. Sales of Heinz Salad Cream fell by 5.4% previous year to £28.8 million. "Better change that name too".

The study, released Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature, showed a 10% decrease in forward speed globally between 1949 and 2016, though there is some variation among ocean basins.

These two trends ought to work in tandem to make today's storms much worse rainmakers.

Worldwide cyclones have become sluggish, slowing down 10 per cent over the past 70 years.

Although commending the study for its findings, she said it is not without its limitations. So it isn't clear just how much of the change that Kossin found is actually attributable to human-induced climate change. The storms, in effect, are sticking around places for a longer period of time.

"Inland flooding, freshwater flooding, is taking over as the key mortality risk now associated with these storms", Kossin said. "Not quite like a cork in a stream, but similar", he said.

In a warming world where atmospheric circulations are expected to change, the atmospheric circulation that drives tropical cyclone movement is expected to weaken. "And when you start getting more and more lines of evidence that all point in the same direction, you get more confident in the answers".
