"Three Californias" initiative qualifies for November ballot

Cal3 mapIn November, California voters will decide whether they still want to be California voters.

The ballot initiative would designate three states.

The proposal was spearheaded by a venture capitalist who says regional communities would function better. "The reality is that for an overmatched, overstretched and overwrought state-government structure, it is too big to succeed".

Proponents of the proposal argue that Californians would be better off with smaller governments that can tailor their policies and actions.

But there's many reasons to be skeptical that voters will choose to split the state.

The plan for partitioning California would be parallel to other states that have been partitioned, including the Dakotas, the Carolinas, and the Virginias.

The plan calls for three states to be created: Northern California, California and Southern California.

- "Northern California" would include 40 counties from Santa Cruz to the OR border, including San Francisco and Sacramento, the current state capital.

He said the speed of the pushback, and the striking bipartisan coalition - chief sponsors include Sen. Since the language is tucked into a larger defense bill, Trump would have no choice but to pass it.

Southern California will consist of a number of counties in the state's Central Valley, Inland Empire, and southern coastal regions, including Fresno, San Bernardino, Orange, and San Diego Counties.

It would also include population centers like much of the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and everything north.

What are the chances of this happening?

If passed, the measure would still need congressional approval to move forward.

"Dems consider California to be a single golden empire, it would be hard for them to accept it as three golden empires". With its 55 electors in the Electoral College, California has always been a stronghold for the Democratic Party.

A nascent opposition campaign already is sounding the more practical alarms about splitting California into three states.

This isn't the first time that Draper has put forward a ballot initiative in favor of breaking up California.

When a person or group backing a measure says it has enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, those signatures are turned over for verification. But the Russia-based leader of that campaign backed off.

Steve Maviglio, a consultant and critic of Draper's efforts, charged that the plan would lead to "political chaos", charging that it would cost each of the new states millions, the Chronicle said.
