Trump Kim summit: USA and North Korean leaders hold historic talks

Trump Kim summit: USA and North Korean leaders hold historic talks

On May 10, Trump announced that he would meet Kim on June 12 in Singapore.

But he said: "in the end, that doesn't matter". We both are going to do something.

Trump told reporters he would "absolutely" extend an invitation to the White House to Kim, who also heralded a new era. The duo then moved into a roughly 40-minute one-on-one meeting, joined only by their interpreters, before including their advisers for additional talks.

That decision has raised concerns about the risk of holding such a monumental meeting with barely anyone to bear witness.

But after a flurry of diplomatic overtures eased tension in recent months, the two leaders are now headed for a history-making handshake that US officials hope could eventually lead to the dismantling of a North Korean nuclear programme that threatens the United States.

Outside the Korean community, local peace groups called for the U.S. government to allow North and South Korea to negotiate a deal for peace on their own. By September, the two leaders were calling each other names, with Trump dubbing Kim "Little Rocket Man" and Kim responding by calling Trump a "dotard".

U.S. and North Korean leaders are set to meet for nuclear talks in Singapore on Monday.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman openly wept on television in a live interview from Singapore as President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met for the first time.

At best, we can hope for a joint statement signed by Trump and Kim that spells out in general terms what both men are hoping to accomplish and how they intend to accomplish it, along with perhaps a grand gesture, like a promise to open a USA embassy-or a McDonald's-in Pyongyang.

The US wants North Korea to get rid of its nuclear weapons in an irreversible manner that can be verified by the worldwide community.

What worked: The 2000 summit came roughly two years after Kim Dae-jung introduced the so-called "Sunshine policy", an initiative created to improve relations between the Koreas.

President TrumpDonald John TrumpTrump: "Excitement in the air" ahead of Kim meeting Trump doubles down on criticism of EU, Canada Merkel: EU will retaliate against Trump tariffs MORE and his national security team must consider the high probability that the know-how powering Kim's achievements will at some point be transferred to Iran, if it hasn't already. Working lunch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

In late March, Trump tweeted with messages of optimism about "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", with mention that Kim would do "what is right for his people and for humanity".

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire US mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the USA and the North. As reported by the Strait Times, in an unexpected telephone conversation with Trump, Moon said that it was only the beginning of what was likely to be a years-long process of denuclearising North Korea.

North Korea has repeatedly expressed a commitment to the "denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula" - notably in a report by state agency KCNA on the eve of the summit - but the term is open to interpretation on both sides and it remains unclear what concessions Kim is prepared to offer. To believe Kim would agree to relinquish his nuclear arsenal-the greatest deterrent for an global campaign to depose his regime-on words alone, or consent to immediately shipping his program out of the country as National Security Advisor John Bolton suggested, were always ludicrous propositions.

Critics of the summit leapt at the leaders' handshake and the moonlight stroll Kim took Monday night along the glittering Singapore waterfront, saying it was further evidence that Trump was helping legitimize Kim on the world stage as an equal of the USA president.

Kim's black armored limousine with two large North Korean flags was surrounded Tuesday by police vehicles, their lights flashing, and other black cars.
