Trump's N Korea summit falls short of Nixon-goes-to-China moment

Donald Trump's summit in Singapore may have been the first time a sitting United States president has met a North Korean leader at the negotiating table but it follows a long history of high level American engagement with Pyongyang over its nuclear ambitions.

"The relationship of deep-rooted hostility and the North Korean nuclear issue cannot be resolved in one single action through a meeting between leaders", said a statement by Moon, who predicted a "long process that could take one year, two years or even longer" to resolve disputes with Kim's regime.

"I really think that Otto is someone who did not die in vain".

The vice president commended Trump on his success thus far with North Korea, speaking of that country's participation in the Winter Olympics, the suspension of all ballistic missile testing and, recently, the release of three American hostages. It is a major accomplishment for Kim Jong Un.

South Korea's president on Monday welcomed the upcoming Singapore summit as a "historic milestone" to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, but noted that Seoul must be part of any future negotiations with the North, which could take years. "The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the U.S., say the haters & losers", he tweeted. He has already invited the North's leader to visit the White House and Kim Jong-un has agreed to come.

He served 527 days of a 15-year sentence of hard labor, during which USA officials staged a surprise trip to Pyongyang last September and demanded that Pyongyang send him home on "humanitarian grounds".
