Wilkes Barre Tornado: Severe Damage Caused By Potential Tornado in Pennsylvania

National Weather Service officials confirmed Thursday that an EF2 tornado had touched down in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, late Wednesday and a second tornado touched down in nearby Bradford County. Officials say more information including an estimated intensity of the tornado and distance of its path would be released later Thursday.

The National Weather Service said it would be in Wilkes-Barre Township on Thursday to survey the damage and determine whether it was a tornado or straight-line winds that caused the damage.

There were no initial reports of injuries, according to the Associated Press.

Joy Frie told The (Wilkes-Barre) Citizens' Voice that staff and patrons huddled in the kitchen of the bar where she bartends until they could escape to another business.

Numerous roofs were destroyed and windows were blown out. Investigators said, "structures were sheared off near their foundation" when describing the damage. As of early Thursday afternoon, their live outage map showed that about 1,000 customers around Wilkes-Barre were without power.
